Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Chicken Stew History

By KC Kudra

Chicken stew is a delicious, warming meal. It is simple to make and you can make a lot of different variations of this tasty dish. Chicken stew actually has a fascinating history and this dish has been enjoyed for many centuries.

A stew is when two or more foods are simmered in a liquid and the liquid is served with the contents. Hungarian goulash, beef stroganoff, beef bourguignon, and coq au vin are all examples of stew recipes.

The oldest cookbook to survive, the "Apicius de re Coquinaria", features lamb and fish stew recipes. It is not known who penned the book but there were three Romans with that name living between 1 BC and 2AD and the book is believed to date from that time.

It is possible to go back even further. Primitive tribes boiled foods together, which is what a stew is. Amazonian tribes used turtle shells to cook in and boiled the turtle entrails with other ingredients. Clam shells and similar were used by other cultures as cooking pots. This kind of cookery is proved to go back seven or eight thousand years with the archaeological evidence we have access to. Pottery was invented about ten thousand years ago and this would have made cooking easier, especially dishes like stew.

Chicken has been domesticated for thousands of years and chicken stew recipes have been enjoyed throughout history too. Different cultures have different types of chicken stews. Examples include spicy Indian curry chicken stew and the chicken in black bean sauce, which is favored in Cuba.

Different Kinds of Chicken Stew Recipes

One very tasty chicken stew is called chicken booyah. This is a cross between a soup and a stew and is popular in northeast Wisconsin. In 1853, the first Belgian immigrants arrived in Wisconsin and they spoke a language called Walloon. It is believed that the word booyah comes from the word bouillon and the non-French speaking Belgian just wrote down how the word bouillon sounded to him phonetically.

Southern Chicken Stew

You might have heard of southern chicken stew too and it is still a very popular dish in some states, especially North Carolina. To make this dish, a whole chicken is parboiled in a milk or cream based broth and butter, salt, and pepper are added as well as other ingredients. This stew varies from thin to thick in consistency and from white to yellow in color, depending on the amount of butter or margarine used. Saltine crackers are often served with this dish.

This dish is often served in the coldest months and "chicken stew" can refer to a get together or gathering where this food is served, rather than the food itself. Chicken stew recipes are often thought of as comfort food because they are comforting to eat and simple to prepare. Chicken stew is commonly served at social get togethers, such as church fellowships, community fundraisers, and family reunions.

At these events, the chicken stew will often be prepared in a big stainless steel or cast iron cooking pot, perhaps outdoors over an open fire. You might get rice, coleslaw or grilled cheese sandwiches served on the side.

How to Cook Perfectly Fried Food with a Deep Fryer

By KC Kudra

A lot of people have never used a deep fryer but deep fried food is a wonderful treat that most of us love to savor from time to time. Deep-frying is actually an easy cooking method when you know how to do it and a deep fat fryer is the safest and cleanest way of deep-frying your food.

How to Deep Fry Food

You need to read all the instructions that came with the machine because different fryers work in slightly different ways. You will also need to have the right cooking oil because these give different results too.

Pour the oil into the deep fryer, keeping it below the max fill line if there is one. Check the instructions if there is no such line. You need the oil to be deep enough to cover the food you put into the fryer but not so deep, that it will run over the sides when you submerge your food.

There will be a temperature control on the machine, either a button or a knob. Some fryers let you know when the oil has reached the right temperature but if your machine does not have this feature, you will need to use a thermostat or drop a cube of crustless white bread into the fryer. If it turns golden brown after one minute, the oil is at the right temperature for deep-frying.

Using the right temperature oil means the food does not absorb much oil. If the oil is too cool, the food will come out soggy. If it is too hot, the food will burn on the outside before the inside is done.

Add the food carefully, using a slotted spoon or tongs if your fryer does not have a basket. Do not overcrowd the fryer or the food will absorb too much oil. The food cooks quickly so you can deep fry in batches and the cooked food stays hot.

If you are adding frozen food to the fryer, brush off as many ice crystals as you can because they can cause spattering. If your fryer has a lid, close it to prevent spattering. Keep an eye on the clock because deep-frying is very quick. Use the slotted spoon or basket to remove the cooked food. After cooking, you can drain your food on paper towels to absorb any excess oil.

Deep Fried Chicken Recipes

Chicken is an incredibly popular food for deep-frying recipes because the results are so good. Deep-fried chicken made at home is just as good as a KFC chicken dinner and it works out cheaper to make your own.

In addition, you are not limited to the KFC side dish options at home. You can make whatever you like to go with your fried chicken, such as baked beans and mashed garlic potatoes or a chili dipping sauce or anything else you fancy.

If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, a deep fryer will be your best friend because you can make delicious fried chicken recipes whenever you want to, in the comfort of your own home. Deep-frying is a safe and simple cooking method and the results come out perfectly.
