Women and Shoes: a Lifetime Love Affair

By Natalia Brophy

My husband always looks puzzled when I bring home another pair of shoes. But you already have a pair of red heels, he would say. I look puzzled back at him: Well, yes, but these are not the same?!

Millions of men ask the question. Why women are so obsessed with shoes?

What makes shoes so special that women spend hundreds of dollars hunting for the perfect pair, which they will end up wearing only a couple of times anyway. Because two weeks later there will be another perfect pair.

There are plenty of explanations why shoes make the majority of women so happy, and every woman may give you a different explanation and justification as to why her shoe closet keeps growing. However, there are a few reasons that most women agree on.

First of all, shoes are great because after you grow up, your shoe size stays pretty much the same. You thighs may triple in size and your waist might disappear, but your feet will stay the same. In most cases that is.

Second of all, you don't need to have too many clothes to look fresh and original every day. All you need is shoes. One pair of jeans will look completely different on you when you wear patent leather red heels, flip-flops or fashionable sneakers with them.

Some people (mostly male) also wonder how some women can wear uncomfortable pointy and narrow shoes with 4 inch heels and why they do it.

Unless you are a woman, it is almost impossible to understand how good it feels to wear shoes which make your leg look slimmer and longer. Many women will choose style over comfort simply because if they look good, they will feel good too.

Wearing high heels makes women's legs look longer and it changes their posture as well. Ladies who know how to walk in high heels, have a more graceful and feminine walk. Of course, it doesn't hold true when women walk with their knees bent while making wide steps.

While doctors don't recommend walking on very high heels on a regular basis, researchers found that wearing moderately high heels is actually beneficial for a woman's sex life. Apparently, wearing heels affects pelvic floor activity, increases muscle strength and their ability to contract.

I don't like to generalize and I cant but mention that not all women love shoes and not all men cant grasp the concept of women and shoes. I know men who own 40 pairs of shoes and I know women who absolutely hate shoe shopping.

If you are like me and feel that you have to have at least ten pairs for each season, there is no need to become like Carrie Bradshaw from Sex in the City and spend hundreds of dollars on a single pair of shoes. Search discount and closeout shoe collections, look for coupons online. Buying shoes for 75% off its retail price is much more fun anyway.
