The heat is on. Sorry ladies, it's time to whip out the razor, wax, and pain kit because it's time to bare your legs once more for summer. Shorts seem to be one of those common fashion trends we tend to under-think. When considering your spring and summer wardrobe for 2009, here are a few things to consider.
Girls: if the pockets peek at the bottom of the leg, your shorts are too short. Unfortunately, many ladies seem get their shorts confused with their lingerie before wandering out into public. Longer shorts, and tailored shorts (think mid-thigh or right above the knee) can actually make your legs look leaner than those skin-tight, stumpy shorts that hug just under your butt. It's always a bit classier to keep some things more mysterious. And please, let us agree that sweat pant material is always wrong (as is the writing across the hiney. What's up with the word “pink” back there when the shorts are obviously blue or green? Pity no one advised the apparently colorblind designer of his error).
Guys: Cargo shorts are a BIG N-O (and they have been for years). Seriously, who has THAT MUCH cargo that they need to equip themselves with upwards of 8 or 9 pockets? If you're carrying more than a phone, you need a man-bag anyway (more on this subject later). It's way past time for you to kick those baggy disasters to the street and upgrade to a sleeker short. Shorts that hit below or at the knee produce a frumpy appearance. Instead, try tailored or straight-leg shorts that come just above or graze the knee, perhaps with a cuff at the bottom.
And, as always, avoid bleached washes or overdone patterns, although sometimes a simple vertical stripe can give an elongating look. A simple cotton short can go a long way with a variety of summer styles. Ladies, don't be afraid to go high-waisted with a straighter leg and simple print. That's totally in. Just remember to keep that junk in the trunk covered (guys, I shouldn't have to tell you, but this applies to you, too).
