Spring fashion 2009 has been touted as the "season of flowers" by style-watchers world wide and they aren't kidding. Flower motifs are in full bloom in clothes, hair styles, even in shoes. From sandals to pumps, it seems that footwear is the latest way to pay homage to Mother Nature.

After seeing some amazing floral interpretations of shoes and boots at the Philadelphia Flower Show in March, I realized what a suitable combination flowers and footwear could be. Last season Prada came out with floral Art Nouveau inspired high heels. While seemingly impractical to the average shoe-buyer, they were heavily advertised making their image hard to forget. And who can resist the beauty of flowers from the Art Nouveau period?

Flowers dominated the cat-walk at the 2009 Paris Fashion Week, including some over-the-top attractions. Bruno Frisoni, creative director for Roger Vivier, debuted an outrageous pair of hand-made fabric flower covered wedges. Coined as the “One Is Too” spring couture line, his shoes live up to this play-on-words. His designs may seem more fancy than functional, but he is serious about his craft. The mark of Frisoni’s mentor, Roger Vivier, is evident in these shoes-as-art, and the addition of Mother Nature’s bounty only makes them more attractive.

Another designer label who got inspiration from the garden was Scherer-Gonzalez. Their spring 2009 shoe collection was focused solely on fresh flowers. Talk about ready-to-wear! The interesting thing about these designer shoes is they were rather unexpected in structure—somewhat akin to floral designs-atop-lucite-stripper-heels. Regardless of your first impression, they make a statement…and likely will inspire women to “pimp up” their feet.

Not all shoes this season are so heavily decorated like those in the Paris show. There are many pairs available in stores across America that keep the floral theme alive in a more discreet fashion. I suppose there is something for everyone, but I have to go with the couture designer’s philosophy—if you’re going to take from the garden, make sure it’s enough for an arrangement. NEW YORK (AP) — Gladiators were tough, but spring's towering, leather-covered, often-studded sandals are an even bigger kick in the aggressive-shoe trend.

The two must-have styles are clearly cousins, but there's been an evolution, thanks in part to chunky platforms, woven textures and more sex appeal.

The "it" bag has been replaced by the "it" shoe, says Nicole Fischelis, the group vice president of ready-to-wear fashion for Macy's. "The aggressive shoe is not a new phenomenon. It's been on the runway for a few seasons, but it's more apparent because of the rocker-chick kind of mood that's coming back into fashion."

But skinny jeans and a leather jacket aren't the only way to wear it. These shoes have an "opposite attraction" with delicate, feminine dresses, too.

"Fusion" is a buzz word in fashion right now, Fischelis says.

"I do think that a soft look can be complemented with a strong accessory; it is all about the balance and confidence in how it is worn," adds Fred Allard, creative director at Nine West. "I think that the platform and studded gladiator sandals from this season can be considered aggressive as well as feminine, depending on the woman who is wearing them."

"Ethereal spring-summer looks need an anchor that's a little edgy," agrees stylist Tara Swennen, who counts Miley Cyrus as a client.

Tastemakers say aggressive shoes go from daytime to evening, casual to dressy, sexy to serious. This flexibility gives them legs as a long-term trend. Macy's and Nine West report swift sales.

You know an aggressive shoe when you see it, but it's hard to describe. Fischelis says the true hallmark is attitude. Swennen touts funkiness. Jennifer Gosselin, vice president and general manager of online shoe store Piperlime, calls the new look a stepped-up gladiator.

There's often a high heel involved, but some kitten heels and even some flats capture the cool-girl spirit. Generally, there's a lot of leather up front but sharp cutouts or straps allow flashes of bare skin. Embellishment ranges from Indian beading to punk-rock hardware.

"Everything is gravitating toward an architectural design," Swennen says. "They're harder on the feet, but the designs are amazing with extravagant details and interesting materials."

Swennen says wearers can save their soles with shock-absorbing cushions and a snug-but-not-tight fit.

Women can participate in this look by diving in with both feet or just dipping a toe, Gosselin says. She identifies Matt Bernson's Barracuda shoe, with its medium-brown leather, double ankle straps, flat heel and pyramid-shaped gold studs as a very accessible, wearable translation of the trend. A peeptoe is a more refined, ladylike version.

"Earth tones are a less edgy place. A cognac color is for beginners, and full-on black with silver or chrome studs with a high heel is the most edgy and you can take it down from there," Gosselin says.

The dramatic, femme-fatale shoe perfectly offsets some of the menswear-inspired fashion coming down the pike later in the year, she says. "As we look toward fall, you'll see in fashion a lot of androgyny with the boyfriend jacket, and boyfriend jeans with a ruffled blouse — and killer shoes."

For the warmer weather, Swennen likes aqua, yellow or silver shoes worn with black, or darker hues paired with crisp white or sandy beige clothes.

The silhouette works with knee-length skirts, Bermuda shorts and both wide- and skinny-leg pants, according to Swennen, but stay away from short shorts or maxi dresses — the proportions just aren't right.

If you feel that tights arent very sexy you can always wear their alternative, hold ups or stockings. Hold ups (stay ups or thigh highs) and stockings, keep your legs covered but are considered to feel sexier and therefore often chosen for more special occasions. Just like ladies tights there are now loads of variations of colour and material so you can get exactly what you need to wear with every outfit.

It looks like gladiator sandals are here to stay for Spring/Summer 2009. Runway daily deems them to be much more than a seasonal trend by noting that the gladiator look has once again flooded the New York Fashion Week 2009 Runways.

If you decided to skip the strappy look last season because you weren't sure whether or not the look was worth investing in, worry no more.

Quite frankly, I wasn't a big fan of this look last season because they looked way too strappy, especially the styles that wrapped all the way up your legs like naked boots. But to my surprise, I'm coming across many cute styles this season in various colors, styles and heights and want to encourage all hips moms to give it a try.

If you are not usually comfortable wearing a hat, I think this summer you should go for it! There are great opportunities to try out this versatile accessory with flattering designs for every outfit and style…and I promise that you don’t have to worry about looking silly. Whether you are interested in a hat for function or fashion, there are some gorgeous options that satisfy both. Here are my picks for the top hat styles for summer 2009…expect lots of follow-up posts with great designs in each category:

• Floppy - the epitome of function and fashion. The floppy sun hat is a great staple for the summer…especially for all of you smart women who protect your skin from harmful UV rays. I love the different colors, fabrics, and sizes that designers are coming up with this season. I have a great straw floppy hat that I picked up in Kauai and I swear that wearing it gives you confidence!

• Short-Brimmed - the update on the basic. This military-inspired cap is similar to the standard baseball cap, except that the head shape is typically a cylinder instead of a half-sphere and the brim is shortened. There are tons of adorable styles with girly fabrics and unique embellishments. I see this as the female version of the baseball cap.

• Cloche - the fashionable vintage look. The cloche is still currently my favorite hat style. I wore one all winter and now I am excited to find a straw cloche for summer. I think they are classy and timeless.

• Head Wrap - the creative and colorful. I have always loved looking through beautiful and brilliantly patterned scarves, but I was never really quite sure how I could use one. This summer I will be posting about ways to use scarves as headwear, which has a wonderfully stylish look and protects your hair from sun damage.

• Fedora: the stylish standard. The fedora has been popular ever since Britney Spears and other celebrities, male and female, started sporting them about five years. Surprisingly this trend seems to have outlasted the careers of some of its wearers. The fedora appears, yet again, this summer in light fabrics and colors. I would love to see some more creative approaches from designers to update this stylish basic…
